Announcing the birth of Jubilee Covenant Presbyterian Church

The latest church in the CPC has been ‘birthing’ a long time. A number of families on the far North side of Wichita, Kansas have been meeting together for Bible Study, prayer, and fellowship of nearly 15 years. While the exact numbers have gradually changed over time, the group’s commitment to a good Biblical foundation, Reformed theology, Christ-centered families, real expressions of love, and each other has not. Having acted like a church for a long time, they are finally simply making it official. Jubilee CPC will start worshiping on Sunday mornings in mid-July at the 101st Street Community Center in Valley Center, Kansas.

This summer, the Penning family from South Dakota will be returning to Kansas to join with the families working to ‘church’ in Valley Center. While the modern church seems to be a Sunday activity, with members apportioning a piece of their life-pie to God, Jubilee hopes to saturate members’ lives with Christ. Following the model of our forefathers, Jubilee hopes to “live in each others’ barns, be each others’ best friends, sharpen each other, encourage each other, and love each other in service to our Lord, Christ Jesus.” Being Christ’s servants is not a part time job, a casual thing, a boring thing, or an independent thing. Guided by God’s Word, every part of our lives can joyfully be surrendered to Christ.

The name of the church itself, while perhaps seeming more Mississippi Southern Baptist than Kansan Presbyterian, refers to the year of Jubilee instituted by God in structuring the society of Israel. The year of Jubilee was intended to keep the people’s focus on God’s community rather than profit, celebrating God’s grace and provision rather than bemoaning life’s troubles, and be a foretaste of heaven while still dwelling here on earth.
