The Covenant Presbyterian Church meets at least twice each year. When Elders meet we hear news and reports about our sixteen churches. We also discuss theological issues, consider how best Christ’s bride can serve our King, and enjoy our developing fellowship.
But our denomination spreads over a substantial area. From Eastern Canada to Arizona, and from California to South Carolina, the pins on our map hint at a daunting problem. How can we minimize the effects of distance upon the work of our church?
The Covenant Presbyterian Church has used modern technology to make our denomination’s work more economical and efficient. While we relish and protect at least one face-to-face time together in June, our second regular meeting is held via conference call.
As the date of the meeting nears, the conference number and access code are distributed. Just like our meeting in June, all interested people are invited to attend. Simply call the telephone number, enter the access code, and the automated system will connect you to the meeting.
An agenda is usually followed, including some business matters (such as roll call, agenda approval, and the reading of past minutes.) Elders present news and prayer requests concerning their congregation, and each church is prayed for. Some matters of discussion might be held over from previous gatherings, and elders might bring up new issues.
The atmosphere of the conference call is by nature different than the June meeting. Elders hear voices and sounds without the benefit of visual stimuli. But patience, and adherence to procedure (such as always introducing oneself when asking the moderator for permission to speak) can ease the difficulties.
Elders can further ease their burdens by signing in to receive screen share. The agenda, important documents, and the actual motion being debated can be viewed on your own computer.
Future technological advancements are being considered, such as: A queue function, where participants can click when they wish to contribute, and the moderator can respond to them in the order they clicked; A moderator/clerk function to mute (temporarily) those participants who forget to ‘silence’ while eating tacos; Webcam inclusion, so participants can see each other during the meeting, and draw mustaches and bow ties on pictures.
Visitors are welcome to listen. Each conference call has included more non-Elder listeners. It’s an easy, less expensive way to take part in Presbytery, while enjoying the comfort of home.
